Clustertruck Review: Good Luck, Clusterstruck!

Clustertruck is an unusual platformer arcade with an extreme protagonist jumping over moving trucks to reach the end. It doesn’t look impressive until you view it from the inside. Download Clustertruck for Nintendo Switch to try this very unusual one!

Graphics – 3/5

Arcades like this aren’t much about visuals. Unlike those “… Simulators”, so numerous lately, in Clustertruck developers, first of all, emulate the behavior of the truck crowd, not a single vehicle. That’s why it’s all so schematic and scratchy. Little do you see at all, but this little should be enough to move from truck to truck. Move it, we said, no time to enjoy the landscape.

Gameplay – 5/5

As we’ve said, your character is jumping on tops of trucks moving along the road in a disorganized crowd. They can hit and smash each other, get off the road, make unexpected turns, and so on. Don’t let it mislead you. Jump from one to another until you reach the goal.

It’s not as simple as it sounds, as you need to get used to its physics first. The physical part of the game is as elaborate as floppy is its appearance. Moving upon the trucks means you need to track the next ones, react if your current truck is hit with another one from behind or from side, and inertia moment impacts your motions too. But all these aspects are soon understood intuitively.

The game features lots of missions, and to help yourself with it, you can earn and purchase some special abilities, like Truck Cannon, Time Control, or Grasping Hook. They can be activated by pressing buttons.

It would have been fun to have at least local real-time multiplayer, but the developers must have found all the ideas of it too weak or bizarre. Well, for your consolation, you can try to compete with ghosts of your friends who have played the same levels.

Controls – 5/5

The game is adapted for Joy-Cons perfectly. You won’t even need all of its buttons to control your character. The physical feel of this game is transferred to your reflexes easily, and the buttons respond like they’re controlled with nerves directly. Leap length is regulated by the time you hold the button, and your direction is controlled with a joystick. This ease, though, is balanced with frequent random shifts in the truck movement.

Replay Value – 5/5

As you get used to the physics, you may want to improve your results on early levels. But there’s much more fun to progress and meet trickier challenges. You can also play the same levels again with different abilities activated, as you can only have two of them active simultaneously. The game offers 90 levels, and it seems not a lot in the beginning, but then you realize that they have some random element, and no level looks the same twice, 90 grows much bigger.

The Bottom Line

Clustertruck is a great physical arcade, and due to some specific attitude of the developers, it’s here for long. Looking obscure, it plays with fun and excitement, hard enough to be a challenge, easy enough to be fun. This Clustertrack review could have been written in 2016, when the game was just released, and remain actual, as it was too perfect for any updates, and it still is.

Conclusion

If you want to come arcade looking and feeling like no other game before, download Clustertruck and try to make it to the end over the tops..
