Forager: a 2D Open World Adventure

Forager is an open world game that combines exploration, dungeon-raiding action, economic strategy, and idle action. It’s a great example of retro visuals put over modern concepts in gaming. If you download Forager for Windows, it will bring you a big world to explore!

Graphics 4/5

It’s not even Golden Age-styled: Forager obviously cites early 1990s, the time of big experiments and explorations. It’s a 2D action, and your character moves all around the place, exploring it, applying moves, calling out menus, and so on. The atmosphere it creates, though, jumps from idyllic relaxation in a green garden to terrifying fast action in the dark of a dungeon. The music is quite like the visuals, though obviously a bit more modern. It all results in the game’s neglectable size (about 200 MB) and system requirements so low that it runs even under Windows XP.

Gameplay 5/5

Basically, it’s simpler. You want to control and shape your land the way you want it. But it takes resources, so you go out to find more of them. Not only do you roam new areas and explore biomes, but also venture down to the dungeons to find precious loot in there.

You can focus on any separate way of expansion. If you like gathering, you can go hunting, fishing, searching for new plants, discovering rarities for the museum. Farming style assumes you can grow anything – from fruits and vegetables to rocks and minerals. A merchant’s approach requires commercial thinking. It may also pay if you focus on building facilities that bring you income. Finally, you can become a dungeon raider and get through adventures with precious trophies.

All of these ways, though, will one moment become yours. Early phases will require being quite universal. And then you are free to go your way.

Controls 5/5

The game supports both keyboard and mouse and gamepads (and touch controls emulating any of these if available). It may be a strange feeling to play a 2D game with a controller: it feels just as retro as it looks. The response is quick, and the overall feel is way better than that of playing old emulated games on modern hardware.

Replay Value 5/5

The open world concept means there are many ways to build your base, make houses and gardens, explore the outer world, expand your property, and proceed the way you like. It’s even fun to try it different ways. Small as it is, the game provides many hours of gameplay.

Conclusion

One of the best open world games in retro style, Forager is highly rated on any service. Still, there are some flaws that inevitably follow its virtues. As soon as you don’t have to survive anymore, the game loses its aim and becomes a complete epilogue, fun but adding nothing to the story. If you’re okay with this, though, you will find it both meditative and challenging..
