Raft Review: SeacRaft

Raft is a survival game set in an open world, utilizing deep crafting mechanics. You start on a simple raft after a shipwreck, and eventually, you build your tropical paradise upon it. You can download Raft for PC now; though it’s still in Early Access, it’s already very playable.

Graphics 4/5

If you like survival games with an open world, but can’t stand the iconic pixel style, Raft will soothe your soul. It’s a beautiful maritime adventure in 3D, with skies endless and water running naturally, and its first-person view enhances your immersion – especially since the immersion is literal. Of course, you may notice the lack of detail, but, given that the size of the game is under 3 GB after installation, it’s forgivable.

Gameplay 5/5

After a shipwreck, you’re alone on a simple small raft. Luckily, you have your hook on a rope, so you can grab various objects right from the raft. You can also swim away for them, but it’s not always safe. The sea is full of sharks that can attack your raft as well. But it’s also full of palm leaves, fish, wood, barrels, various items from the wrecked ship, and you can catch them and use for crafting.

The further you play, the more various items you can craft out of these. Finally, you’ll be able to build an entire tropical island based on your once small raft. Crafting is an integral part of the gameplay, and the first-person perspective adds immersion. And don’t forget to venture further: new places bring new discoveries!

There is also a cooperative mode, similar to that in Minecraft. A group of survivors is able to do more, turning your robinsonade into The Mysterious Island. The cooperative mode with all the communication required goes far from the solo lost-in-the-sea experience, but it’s the matter of taste.

Controls 4/5

The game is well adapted for keyboard-and-mouse style. It takes about a minute to get used to its controls. There is no tutorial for this game; on the other hand, you can check anything in Settings while the game is paused. What it does lack is gamepad support: it would fit the gameplay well, but alas. Maybe later, when the game hits the consoles.

Replay Value 5/5

Not that it’s an action that keeps you strained. On the contrary, it’s a relaxing game that flows like water. It’s the game to return to just to relax, even with no intention of full exploration. Raft can be played as just the right state of mind.

The Bottom Line

Maybe this Raft review will be obsolete by the time you read it, as the game will once outgrow its Early Access status, with all due changes. But it delivers lots of fun in its current state. Its skies and sea bottom, islands and wrecks are fascinating.

Conclusion

If you love games for the atmosphere they deliver, it’s a great chance. Download Raft and get your own floating paradise you can build and improve as you want.

Pros : A very immersive maritime crafting game;
Lots of stuff to find and craft;
Immersive and even meditative gameplay;
Low system requirements.

Cons : A little disbalanced in terms of crafting;
No gamepad support;
May feel dull in singleplayer mode.
