Graphics 5/5

TheHunter: Call of the Wild game is stunning. It’s one of these rare representations of the real forest, savanna, and taiga that makes you feel like Bror Blixen or Takkar from Far Cry Primal.

When the gentle wind rustles the autumn foliage, you almost catch that chill and nostalgic lo-fi mood. The scorching African sun shows some solid ray tracing and reflection effects — an occasional glare can blind you for a second and ruin a 26-minute ambush, provoking frustrated grunts.

There are plants, meticulously mimicked and native to each biome. There is bird tweeting that soothes your anger as another ibex flees away. And there’s a nicely vast territory that lets you come up with different tactics and plans.

Gameplay 3.5/5

Our TheHunter: Call of the Wild review is sure about one thing: patient people will like its recipe. The whole game is about tracing, stalking, and assassinating your furry prey. While staying noiseless and almost invisible.

There’s a whole swarm of beautiful and dangerous critters. For starters, you can try your luck with a mountain goat, warthog, or turkey. And even a squirrel. And it’s not that easy to kill one as they are small, agile, and quick. Plus, the more you damage its body/fur, the less your score will be.

Later, you will deal with such juggernauts as lion, black bear, Siberian musk deer, puma, Canadian moose, etc. It can take up to 40 minutes to trace one of them down. Your magic senses will assist you, showing the trails that they leave.

But you need to be as elusive as a pigeon’s shadow. They see and hear you from half a mile, so crouching and moving slowly is a must. Taking a good aim too: in case you miss, the wounded animal will skedaddle in panic. Again, it lowers score.

Controls 4/5

TheHunter: Call of the Wild simulator has classic FPS controls. Learning them is a breeze, but mastering… It’s a whole new challenge. Call of the Wild strives to deliver maximum realism. So, taking aim like a true sniper requires hours of practice

Replay Value 4/5

Hardcore sim fans will appreciate how merciless CoW is. Every little mistake is punished by the lowered score. You won’t make easy frags and conquer the leaderboard in minutes. So, if you don’t mind spending about an hour on catching just one fat-bottomed hog, then you’re golden.

Conclusion

TheHunter: Call of the Wild is an elaborate pastime. Patience, intelligence, strategy, good eye, and iron nerves — that's what you’ll need to succeed in the game. But in turn, you'll be rewarded with the jaw-dropping locales and infinite bragging rights..
