We Happy Few for PS4 Review: Pure Joy, Don’t Get Us Wrong

We Happy Few is a dystopian adventure set in an alternative XX century. Your character begins a new life, without a drug named Joy, and it causes conflicts with the addicted majority you need to overcome. Download We Happy Few for PS4 and go through what nightmare could have been our reality.

The developers intendedly made the game look like an adult cartoon, with caricaturized characters and hyperbolized grimness of the place. The contrast between those drawn faces and real horrors they’re causing gets even more shocking with this. Despite some tricks may seem cheap (like almost exact copying of dull houses), they in fact contribute to the totalitarian atmosphere. For this Kafkaesque sort of story, it works even more wonders than any photorealism.

Gameplay 5/5

Three protagonists are expecting you here, unlocked eventually. Each of them has given up their daily dose of Joy, the drug that’s used by most inhabitants of Wellington Wells. There are some hard memories of the war, and Joy brings relief. But not for us, unhappy fewer.

Life gets adventurous too fast, as soon as they notice there’s something wrong with you, and the escape saga starts. The greatest thing about it is its unpredictability: you don’t know a thing about where it will get you. You only know that you need food, clothes, shelter, and… drugs. So you’ll turn to a thief, a fugitive, an outcast, using lots of skills, from stealth and dashing to knowledge of chemistry. The quests may seem too monotonous (especially if you select the easy level of difficulty), but the storyline pays for that.

Unlike lots of survival games, We Happy Few isn’t about fighting at all. You’ll need more stealth than strength, and more shelters than shells. That makes the story unusual,

Controls 5/5

As you control a single character at any moment, selecting from various action options, Dualshock offers the best experience possible. It makes easily available both moving and certain actions, like stealing in, taking or storing drugs, or crafting various items. Yes, you’ll have to do some crafting as well.

Adventure games usually follow the storyline. But this one, first of all, offers three storylines with different protagonists in the same setting. Second, you can adjust difficulty, and after you’re through on Easy, why not try it a level harder? And, finally, the world you wander through is generated randomly, so the game never repeats itself.

Conclusion

Writing We Happy Few review is like passing a minefield: spoilers aren’t welcomed, but the game deserves some praise. Just trust what you’ve read: it’s one of the greatest dystopian games ever released.

Conclusion

If you like serious Sci-Fi and alternative history, but have somehow missed this title, download We Happy Few and be sure to enjoy it, even more than once..
