Shadow Fight 2 Review: Darkest Warriors

Shadow Fight 2 by Nekki is an arena fighting game, a specific version of those arcade hits of Golden Era. Even if you’re familiar with mobile versions, you’ll find it new to download Shadow Fight 2 for Nintendo Switch and try its multiplayer and other innovations!

Graphics – 5/5

Shadow Fight manages to go minimal in imagery and remain spectacular. It shares something with those Hong Kong movies that inspired lots of arena games, starting with Mortal Kombat. But silhouette representation of the fighters is really impressive. Though later the opponents become more and more recognizable, the style remains. The overall quality is great on Switch, despite some visual glitches that show in dialog scenes.

Gameplay – 5/5

This is a story of a warrior bold enough to challenge demons, and careless enough to lose his body in this battle. He returns to his sensei to restart his education as a shadow, and remasters the martial art from scratch. With personality eventually being restored, the Shadow Warrior will revisit the demons.

The game combines elements of two genres: arena fighting and RPG. Fighting is probably the most visually attractive part of the game: two warriors are only seen as silhouettes, and sometimes you even lose track of which of them is yours. You may need to do some specific move to tell.

Victories lead you to mastering new skills and unlocking new tricks and weapons. The further you go, the more of them you unlock, and the more sophisticated your art gets. Earn coins in training fights and side missions and spend them on new equipment, weapons, and even magical skills!

There’s still no online multiplayer, but along with story mode, there is a special local multiplayer for Nintendo Switch (unlike tablets and phones the game was originally designed for). Each player takes one Joy-Con to control the selectable character, so it reduces some moves, but simplifies the overall control. Personalized special powers make warrior characters more individual and diverse. So Shadow Fight 2 completes the circle and returns to arcade PvP arena fighting it originated from.

Controls – 5/5

It’s quite simple in the beginning, and then gets more complicated, as you unlock new tricks. Local battle suggests that each player takes one Joy-Con to control the character. This also means some control simplification. But this mode is already worth playing on Switch, even if you’ve been through this game on a phone or a tablet.

Replay Value – 5/5

Fans say that Shadow Fight 2 (originally released in 2013) is the best in the series, and this one was selected for porting to Switch despite SF3 was already out then. With PvP it becomes even more replayable, and new missions with Sensei may attract fans already familiar. And if you missed its iOS or Android version, having Shadow Fight 2 on your Switch makes even more sense.

The Bottom Line

It’s a good port, worth writing a special Shadow Fight 2 Nintendo Switch review. Though the game is not that new, it has some advantages over the original, like multiplayer, or no need to purchase extra in-game currency to advance.

Conclusion

If you like good fighting games with RPG elements, or you want to try classics with a new control system, or just miss those Mortal Kombat arcades from the 1990s, just download Shadow Fight 2 for Nintendo Switch and relive those exciting moments..
