Grandpa Review: Just Another Horror

Grandpa is an indie horror adventure, telling the story of an escape from an old maniac. You need to find your way out of the house with traps and puzzles in every room. Download Grandpa and become a hero of modern horror!

Graphics 4/5

Most indie games cannot boast visuals that can compare to major projects. But playing it is like watching horror movies of the 1970s, with the special style despite all technical imperfectness. The same is here. You act the events from the first-person view, so the immersion is complete, and some graphical flaws may be explained as bugs of your eyesight caused by stress. The game is still in “early access”, and that’s another excuse.

Gameplay 3/5

Escape rooms are all similar in the essence and incredibly variable in details. This time your character has been caught by an old psycho and locked in the house with a puzzle in each room. Sometimes they interconnect, so one puzzle gives just a key to another.

Besides that, the Grandpa is always somewhere near, and if he catches you, the game is over. Luckily, there are some syringes with a tranquillizer, and you can use this weapon to temporarily immobilize the maniac. Then you need to escape his evil attention.

So, what we see is a mix of what we have seen in Slenderman, Hello Neighbor, and lots of games like this. That’s not bad for the genre that has been flourishing on exploiting the same schemes over decades. But neither this is good.

The game doesn’t take very long to go through, and that’s the major issue. It can be played to the end in less than 15 minutes; forgivable for “early access” and moderate price, but the final release should provide much more playtime or involve procedural generation.

Controls 4/5

The game utilizes the default scheme for first-person quests. You use WASD to move, E to interact with items, and so on. It’s the best about the game: no need to relearn the control scheme, you just play it as you did in other games before. Yet there are still lots of bugs, slow response, and not as smooth movement as we’d like.

Replay Value 2/5

As we have mentioned, this game doesn’t deliver long playtime. Besides that, its locations and quests are fixed, so there’s no fun to replay it. Maybe, long time afterwards, when you have completely forgotten it, you may want to return to it. Well, if it gets reworked before the release, it would be fun to write another Grandpa review! But so far it’s hopelessly single-use.

Conclusion

It’s just another survival horror, with rooms to leave and mad villain to escape. If you like this sort of game, there’s one more for you. But it’s no prominent title, at least, so far it looks like a good demo, and that’s it.

Conclusion

If you want to see another horror story about escape from the puzzle house, download Grandpa. But don’t expect miracles from this modest indie piece..

Pros : No obvious bugs;
Interconnected quests;
It’s a new piece of horror quest.

Cons : The playtime is too short;
The game lacks originality;
No solid storyline.
