Graphics 3.5/5

Kerbal Space Mission release date is 2011. Since then, the game got a major facelift. We have new landscapes, physical effects, and an expanded astronaut roster. But at times, the game feels stripped: the alien planets are pretty bare bone. There are no psychedelic landscapes of faraway worlds to gaze at.

At the same time, KSM does a mighty job at emulating physics. There's a magic contrast of the gravity and weightlessness that you experience once your rocket breaches the planet's atmosphere. And rocket crashes are quite scenic too, slapping you in the face with the collision effects.

Kerbals — your loyal lackeys — are a bag of fun on their own. Their balderdashing pitched voices, engineering buffoonery, and grumpy personas give this difficult game a heart. They look like a hybrid of Despicable Me minions and Three Stooges who have little brains, but a ton of courage.

Gameplay 5/5

Kerbal Space Program gameplay isn't easy. Architecting your first rocket that will reach Mun — the game's twin sister of our Moon — will take a dozen retries. And that's if you're lucky enough.

You don't need to know scary formulas or brainy words like dynamic ceiling. But understanding why symmetry is important, how many fuel tanks you need to land the spacecraft, and also watching altitude/heat ratio — it's all a must.

You can experiment with all that mambo-jumbo in the game's editor. Or try the KSP campaign — if you're gutsy. In this mode, KSP will also challenge your business wits. You will need to fulfill contracts, find sponsors, and lead R&D. As well as engineer rockets personally.

Kerbals will help you any way they can, making funny faces. As you progress, you will unlock more planets to catapult these unlucky critters to. Starting with Mun — the closest heavenly body — you will amass more cash and knowledge to conquest planets light years away.

Controls 5/5

Most of the time you'll spend in the modular editor tinkering with rocket components. It's easy: adding/removing parts can be done with just a mouse-click. Before attaching a nozzle or oxidizer, you'll see a preview of how it'll look on the spacecraft. Finally, when it's time to fly, simply hit Spacebar to go to space.

Replay Value 4.5/5

This Kerbal Space Program review guarantees a lot of fun. First, it's impossible to make the debut launch successful, unless you've had a 10-year experience at NASA prior to that. Second, its tough, but funny challenges spark excitement. And nearly gambling passion — will the next launch finally make it?

Conclusion

Kerbal Space Program is a tough game for tough people. Its difficulty makes it a worthy rival to Dark Souls, only in a different genre. But the taste of success, when your rocker lands without a single hitch on another planet, is sweeter than Mountain Dew mixed with maple syrup..
