Staxel Review: Cute but Undeniably Boring

Staxel is a creative game even though its premise has been overused too many times. As a farming sandbox simulation game, don’t expect too much of it. You can download Staxel on Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Graphics — 4/5

One of the game’s key selling points is its graphics, but not because they are heavily pixelated. Rather, the fact that they have such meticulous attention to detail. Farmlife is an often exhausted genre, and Staxel doesn’t try to reinvent it. The maps are bright and colorful, and there are unique NPCs to interact with. If you’re not a fan of wooden LEGO characters, the visuals won’t be for you.

Gameplay — 3/5

The gameplay is a bit stale, as there is little to expect from this game after playing for a while. Do you know how you can keep clutching onto something in the hopes that some good excitement will emerge from it? That’s exactly how this game feels. Why you are playing the game in the first place is the question you’ll probably ask yourself after two hours in Staxel. There’s little to discover in the outside world, not unlike some games in this genre which bank on your unlocking surreal environments to keep you enthralled.

The crafting system is another thing that should be purposefully developed. It has been made unnecessarily cumbersome to the extent that you’d rather just skip it altogether if you want to make any meaningful progress. There’s literally no content in this game that you look forward to, even if it’s simply a matter of exploration. Suffice to say the game dev portion of Staxel completely missed the mark.

Controls — 2/5

Staxel doesn’t just falter heavily on the gameplay front, but on the UX and controls as well. The controls are clunky, and interaction with menus is as unintuitive as it gets. It feels as if the tweaks that you usually make by beta testing playing concepts have been skipped. Staxel lacks almost completely in intuition with its controls, and the UI link to the control system is no better than fidgety.

Replay Value — 1/5

You probably won’t want to sit around too long waiting to see how this game pans out, and Staxel gives you little motivation to do so. From a clunky UI to a generic storyline and activities that seem to have little meaning to their end, Staxel is probably not a game you’d think of playing twice. The cloned characters and boring conversations every day almost make you want to ask for a refund.

Conclusion

‘To each their own’ would be the best way to encapsulate this Staxel review. The game is marketed as quite entertaining, but the reward for dedicating time and energy into it is almost nil. Farming sim games are in no shortage, not just on Steam, but available on iOS and Android too. You get the feeling such a game would have been ergonomically better for the mobile arena.

Conclusion

Don’t bother downloading Staxel. It is a harbor for total disappointment, and it probably isn’t worth your time..
