Facebook Lite Review: Almost The Same, but Way Tinier

Facebook Lite is a lightweight version of the basic Facebook app that preserves most of its features. Even more, it has a built-in Messenger, so you don’t need a standalone app for exchanging messages and calling. Download Facebook Lite for Android and enjoy what Facebook can be!

Design 4/5

Yes, it’s a little rougher than the main app, mostly because of its limited size. Animations are gone. Graphic elements are removed or reduced. Nevertheless, it’s very similar to the browser view of Facebook. If you’re an experienced Android user, it might remind you of the early 2010 styles. Last but not least: Messenger part of it looks very tiny, as if a desktop web page was shrunk to fit into the smartphone. It’s okay if you don’t mind fine print.

Usability 4/5

Formally, Facebook Lite delivers the same features that the bigger versions. With this app, you can read your feed, post your own statuses, upload photos and videos, react to others’ statuses and comment them. All your communities and public pages also remain available. You can also add users as friends, remove them, set accessibility and current mood for your statuses, and so on. If you are not a power user, the experience won’t change much.

If this Facebook Lite review seems too similar to that of the main app, here are the downsides to that liteness. It takes a bit longer for the app to open a page, and it’s understood if we suppose Facebook Lite is basically a mini browser. When you turn your device while watching videos, they don’t go full screen. Messenger won’t send your location or a voice message, only supporting photos and videos. Minor drawbacks like that may result in major discomfort. If you don’t feel it, though, this app is a better choice for you.

Features 4/5

It’s great that voice and video calls didn’t suffer from going lite. You can apply available effects and filters while your video chats, as well as invite your friends for “activities” – AR-based games. The app supports conference calls, too. It takes quite a fresh device, though. This app also lacks games and some media features.

In-app Purchases 5/5

Facebook services are absolutely free unless you want to place your ads. This app is not meant for this activity, though. If Facebook is a marketplace for you, you better access it from a desktop or the main app.

The Bottom Line

Facebook Lite is the perfect choice for old or budget Android phones and tablets. Even on a decent modern device, it may be a better option if you want the functionality of the two apps in one. But it lacks the details that form the entire picture, and if you have got used to full-fledged versions, that lack may annoy.

Conclusion

If you lack memory on your device or don’t want to have two apps for one service, you can install Facebook Lite to solve both problems. It lacks some extras but does the main work well.
