Gujian3: A Very Chinese Action RPG

Though we didn’t recognize the engine behind the game exactly, it looks very spectacular. Despite minor flaws in details, the overall impression is great. It’s a living, breathing third-person adventure in a large open world in 3D. It takes about 40 GB, but, due to Oriental manner, it looks way more spectacular than many European or American analogs.

Its Chinese origin shows: the world resembles mainland China as its shown in various history movies, with mountains, clouds, castles, villages, and mystical creatures. As for the OST with Chinese violins and other traditional instruments, it’s just hypnotizing.

Gameplay 5/5

If you can’t speak Chinese, you will miss most of the storyline (unless you’re an expert in silent cinema). Yes, the game has English subtitles, but sometimes they might seem absurd because of (probably) too literal translation. As for cutscenes and choices, there are a lot. Reading the subtitles may help, but it distracts as well.

As for the combat system that remains, it’s very Souls-like. Not that the fights are very hard, except for the bosses, but the enemies appear out of nowhere where you least expect. They are also very diverse, so you will have to vary your technique against them.

Controls 5/5

It’s a purely PC game, so it’s fully keyboard-and-mouse-friendly. If you wish, though, you can connect your gamepad and play as if it was a console. The support is partial, and you’ll want to take your mouse when it comes to navigation through menus. But both ways are good when it comes to actual gameplay. As it’s a single-player adventure with no online features like matching, your style is completely up to you.

Replay Value 5/5

If you intend to learn Chinese, this game is perfect assistance, given that you love the genre. You may combine it with playing, because the game is a long play, with the main quest for about 40 hours, and tons of side quests. As in most RPG’s, the side quests are story-based, and the missions can be quite unexpected and unusual, so without understanding the language one might be just walking blind.

Conclusion

If you like these unusual Oriental games with no English dubbing, you might like this one. But to fully enjoy it, you must either speak Chinese well or ignore the story and focus on combat. Subtitles may help, but your reading skill should be quite fast..

Pros : High-quality visuals and long story;
Unusual Oriental aesthetics;
Souls-like combat style;
Diverse enemies requiring various combat styles;
Great boss fights.

Cons : English is only the subtitles;
The story isn’t clear without knowing the language;
Regular fights are next to no fun.
