HZ1 Battle Royale Review: One More BR

Z1: Battle Royale (formerly known as H1Z1) is one more game featuring endless battle with selection of weapons, poisonous gas shrinking the battlefield, lots of modes and only one survivor. If you like this kind of games, download H1Z1 for PS4 for free now, while it stands the competition!

Graphics – 5/5

When it comes to visuals, Z1 does its best to be realistic: at least, more realistic than Fortnite or PUBG. It still looks like a high-quality cartoon, but with more details and better perspective. It also combines third person and first person view. Created for PC, it utilizes the performance of PS4 to make the gameplay smooth and easy. Sounds are distinct enough to hear gunfights or cars (if you have good acoustics connected).

Gameplay – 4/5

It’s as much a typical Battle Royale as can be, with all its attributes. You’re deployed onto unknown terrain, with no reason to fight except for survival. The one who stays longest is the winner (or, if you play duo or five mode, the winning duo or team).

As you land, you can go out searching for equipment. There are weapons, from rifles and shotguns to crossbows, ammos (or bolts), body armors and helmets, and medicines to help you recover. None of these can be bought or brought with you; everything is to be found. Luckily, the battleground is rich in them.

Of course, everybody’s brought together in the central spot by poisonous gas that spreads around, leaving but a small safety zone. It’s not meant for safety, of course, but rather for the final stand. The map displays the spreading and the direction to run for your (or somebody else’s) life. There are also cars that may be undamaged enough for you to drive; that’s the easiest way to escape the gas, but they are perfect targets as well.

While the developers don’t try to invent details like pirate or fairytale seasons of Fortnite, seasons of H1Z1 are rather prolonged contests. You also get your quests (like finding certain weapons or doing certain tricks) and your rewards for that, regardless of external events.

Controls – 5/5

While it’s a port of a PC game that still has no native gamepad support, the work of reassigning moves and actions is done decently. If you have ever played any other BR game on your PS4, you’ll easily make out this one. Of course, it has detailed instruction you can address to in the beginning. But we suppose you just won’t have to, after two or three games.

Replay Value – 4/5

Battle Royale games (including H1Z1) are very replayable, as you always start where you begin, and the conditions always vary. You only can rely on your skill, as nobody has an advantage, and finding a good weapon is mostly a question of luck. The only thing that makes it less idyllic is hard rivalry. PUBG seems better at traditional war game, Call of Duty: Black Ops remains the most spectacular of BR games, and Fortnite is the fastest to update.

The Bottom Line

Now called Z1BR, this game goes through hard times constantly. It changes hands, gets renamed, starts new servers around the globe and shuts down some old ones, introduces new modes and discontinues some others, so any H1Z1 BR review gets dated soon. And, with all this mess, it does work properly so far. So download H1Z1 now and support it, if you want the world (and yourself) to enjoy one more BR game.

Conclusion

If you want Just a Different Battle Royale Title, why not download H1Z1: Battle Royale? Not as mainstream and trite as Fortnite or PUBG, it’s still a quality game of the genre..

Pros : Good graphics (for a reasonable size);
Basically free;
Large open world with lots of transports and weapons;
Controls optimized for Dualshock;
Constantly evolves.

Cons : Not as crossplatform as Fortnite or PUBG;
Loses popularity in 2019;
Hasn’t got a special thing about it.
